great question to you know being a believer first you know is christ you know being introduced to those bibles story those bible lessons my parents you know have a critical role i also said

you know the village that i came up around now there was strong men and women who had positive impact on me and even my own my my family as well my wife and children you know having having children you learned so much otertimes we think about our role as a teacher which is obviously important but we learn so much from our children and about them and about ourselves the process

yeah like i love that i have kids too i'm constant learning from my kids things that i didn't know especially now that i can't work all lectronics and like my ten s got to tell me how to turn a t v

so i read your bio and i think you have a fascinating journey and a fascinating story could kind of share with

in your own words your story your journey

[michael_t__brown]:

my story journey i would tell it starts out with piling lad feeling called to the helping profession i knew pretty early on i'd say right out of high school with

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

what i wanted to do in general was you know helping others serving others through some type of psychological aspect my you know got embassadors and psychology didn't know exactly you know what track i was going to take and then going down the school counseling route and it's been a career steeped in in that

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

[michael_t__brown]:

you know sixteen years doing that then i did some traveling where i worked with a resilience company you know teaching resilience principles across the country helping children you know stay focus helping helping stand and those who work with with with students teaching them resilience principles of how to help children stay motivated get their work to stay he trouble you know having that school counseling background starting with children you know working on all three levels middle to start in high school and in elementary it gave me a wide breath of you know what success looks like and oftentimes it starts right you know with our youth having those conversations being a integral part of being now being an educator in the child's life it helped build me up to where i am now you know working you know directly in as a as a counselor in private practice i see individuals families couples here reginally in the washington d c northern ganearia nd across the country and so my journey has been um as a councillor and as an educator and it's been pretty consistent throughout and we're seeing some some tremendous success with the folk for working in

so i just saw an article that said to parents

be very vigilant in watching your kids this year as they go back to school and as

[michael_t__brown]:

of the concerns i hear from parents is how do you identify if your child may be having some struggles

what is some advice you may have for parents as you try to look in she

is my child really struggling and i'm missing it with some

sign you would say to identify in your child

[michael_t__brown]:

i would say you know first and foremost you know one of the best ways to to set the stage for that is to spend time with your children there's just no way around that because when you spend time an individual naturally right you're going to notice you know any changes in behavior some things are just not going to go miss when you put the time in and i know in the busy world that we live in and so much going on we all can be pulled in many directions but i think that's going to be the elephant if you will putting the time in noticing how they're what they're experiencing having those conversations with them gaging them out you know it's interesting i think about sometimes so my best conversation is when you with your children is when you're in a fun activity sometimes you get a little more out of them right or maybe on

that ride home in the car where you maybe get a few more questions answer that then you normally would because it's in a relaxed state so i would say that that's gonna that can go a long way but i'm as far as specifics what to look for obviously if you know if you know it's your child maybe retreat more and that's one thing that the pandemic you know have has has highlight enough the need for connection to others you know and even though they you know we may be more connected online oftentimes people are more disconnected in the real world of relationships so i'd say monitory note their relationships you know being engaged having asking those questions and you know listening to the feedback of others their teachers you know engaging that seeing are they as engaged in the activities as they normally would so just kind of pause right there

i look at i look at

kids today and i'm like they are they have so much on their plates that i didn't deal with and

um so many interactions and sometimes a social media that i never had to deal with trying to navigate all those different places of points of connection it's just hard sometimes and you never know exactly

[michael_t__brown]:

you know what's going on so i like those those ques you gave us to just spend time with your kids when i work with

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

interviewing pastors for congregations

[michael_t__brown]:

one thing i discovered was like you said the best way to kind of get a good sense of people is a relaxed atmosphere

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

when when you're in a interview type situation you're on you're on point but when you're just having dinner a couple of coffee you more more

[michael_t__brown]:

that's

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

relax

[michael_t__brown]:

right

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

and the

[michael_t__brown]:

that's

more natural u comes out so yeah

[michael_t__brown]:

that's right and you touch on something key there with the social media interactions and you know it's okay for parents to monitor that have boundaries around there get in their business if you will you know now

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

obviously part of a team's job or a child's job and we can relate to this growing up as well is to help get parents out of our business that's a natural tendency and we ought not have amnesia on that right

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

right exactly

[michael_t__brown]:

some things have not changed just the methods oftentimes change there's more you know band with as you will but i

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

sure

[michael_t__brown]:

think that's important too a not always be

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

[michael_t__brown]:

big brother but at the same time

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

you know having our finger on the pulse goes a long way and it's interesting to because oftentimes if done the right way children appreciate that because

boundaries right help keep them safe

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

right

[michael_t__brown]:

limits help keep them saying absolutely

so as we as we connected one of your passions i saw it come out and you as i also a passion of mind is leadership

[michael_t__brown]:

absolutely

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

so give us some clue to how you become an effective leader i mean that is that is the key when i first got into my my career leadership was very rare it was all about management all of a sudden there was a shift and in the early late late eights early nineties that it wasn't so much about management i was about leadership we kept talking about how do you grow leaders and our leaders

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

born or leaders created are they developed so tell us how you become an effective leader

[michael_t__brown]:

i think first is to it's important to know what leadership is and one of the best definitions i've heard is that leadership is influenced we all can have influence i think if we can kind of sell that issue that's going to help navigate the past forward to know that we all can be i say should be leaders but first we need to see ourselves as that because we all can have an influence you know used to say you know one of the most influential people in the building is the custodian they have the keys to get you where you need to get right but that's leadership so leadership is not always about title or position it's about impact and influence somebody may be listening to day and say well i don't have a high falutin title but they're making it happen for their children right that the stay at home mom or dad who's who's influencing a positive direction so knowing that where a leader is important and also thinking about a ladder of leadership how do i raise up others and i think one of the greatest ways to raise up others and have a positive influence is to be a servant do not just think about a title but think about a towel we think about that and through through through jesus right in his servant leadership king of kings and lord of lords showed up asking how can i serve no he watched the disciples feet and i think that's a great blueprint that we can we all i think dr king said well we all can be leaders because every everyone can lead because everybody can serve right so and i get hierarchal positional it matters there there are i believe in you know you know it's important to understand chain command and authority so that's i have to discount that at the end of the day when we show up saying how can i bring my influence how can i serve how can i make this environment better whether we're a bombastic out front leader or somebody who may be more quiet and reserved behin the scenes but they know how to make things happen leadership is influenced yeah

i love the fact that used the example of wash disciples feet i just interviewed another podcast yesterday and he used that exact same example he is a historical leader

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

and he talks about you know teaching christian values and look at history and talked about the same thing we need he said we need in our politicians that servant leadership

[michael_t__brown]:

absolutely

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

because what we see often times in leadership is kind of how i heard about it growing up the leader i saw was the leader who climb up the lad and put a letter up behind him you know

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

so nobody

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

somebody else could follow us like no you're right

[michael_t__brown]:

it's not about that but who can i help up that ladder with me i just pulled the ladder up myself

[michael_t__brown]:

i heard i put this way you know there's no success

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

without a success or

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

right

[michael_t__brown]:

so if someone's not

a leader alongside them if the organization or the the the the organization or the effort caves when you leave maybe we haven't done the best job extending that ladder know um you talked about that type of leadership where it's the mind sat is what's in it for me oftentimes folks who're supposed to be following know that and won't follow so if you call yourself a leader and you look back and nobody is alongside you you're probably just taking a walk bright it's about it's about bringing

people bringing others along with us and great leaders get that and folks want to be around them and they want to work

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

want to

[michael_t__brown]:

with them um

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

notice i said work with them not for them

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

[michael_t__brown]:

a lot of folks say why i work for john

i get that what happens if john leaves it's different if you're working for the mission

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

right i love to use that quote that was on my wall when i was when i was in the ministry just like

yeah

if if you're leading and nobody is following you just taking a walk i

[michael_t__brown]:

taking a while

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

always reminding myself of that it's like if no one's behind you not really ella i

[michael_t__brown]:

that's it and i will add to just behind us but alongside

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

it's not just the jolar behind me you can come along side me and and we can share some of the credit

so so you work a lot with young

people and i think as i was talking to someone to just recently slike can we say we're leaving a better america are better tomorrow for our kids and i don't know if we can say that right now

so as we as we try to pour into our the next generation of leaders what can we do to better inspire them to better prepare them for what will probably be a more difficult path

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah

than we had growing up

[michael_t__brown]:

yeah i appreciate that question to keith and you know i'm still big on american i'm still big on our youth something happens generationally and it seems like every generation always wants to say the generation coming behind them is worse

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

[michael_t__brown]:

it's fascinating to me i rememerwhn i was going they said the same thing you know

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

right

[michael_t__brown]:

and i get it from a certain perspective but oftentimes when you look at the numbers that just does not play out

[keith_haney__the_man__the_myth__the_legend]:

yeah

[michael_t__brown]:

we got some really good statistics out here as well about you know you think about even a job market right now i know we have challenges i know we have real issues so it's not about being naive but i'm still big on america because i'm big on our out and i see i see a generation coming up that is not king it out in the park we need to encourage them we need to inspire them because in many ways if we'll fall back and allow them to lead they're going to encourage and inspire us so i say to the to i say to have a better america we need better individuals it's okay to focus on what i call the big three or mental physical and spiritual health investing in all three what are we doing to expand our mental capacities right through our education reading the right books connecting with the right people um ah know that principal garbage n garbage ob for putting in good things into our mental health getting therapy if we need to deal with it trauma we need to physical help right to take care of our physical temple exercise eating right and spiritually what are we doing for that part of ourselves that we can't see so i think i'm seeing a generation who is particularly in the mental health field here's more folks come to there but i think now than ever we can say that you know just pros and cons of that from a standpoint as you know whether why are more people coming i think i think i go on more the optimistic side i think people are being more attuned we know we need mental health everybody is going to be therapy but we all need somebody to talk to i put it this we keep everybody needs somebody in their phone that you can call and say i'm not good things aren't going well i need to talk not just surface love talk real conversations so um i'm still big on america because i'm big on people and i believe our best days are yet to come it's

not being naive to the challenges that we face because they're real dat but we stepped up before we're going to continue to step up

that you are encouraged by america's because a lot of people right now are down a lot of people are

[michael_t__brown]:

depressed

a lot of people like you say need someone

[michael_t__brown]:

talk to because they do feel i think i saw a pole that six per cent of americans were heading in the wrong direction

but but it's we still have a generation of people and kids like you said behind us who i do see a lot of potential in them

absolutely

i see i see a lot of passion in them they have they have a compassionate sp

have a desire to want to pour into people's lives i

i hear a lot of you know negative about millennials but millennials are passionate about

interesting story to share her with you when i was a high

school councillor know man i struggled with i struggle with seeing kids with their pants down behind i struggle with that thing pray for me man you know at i'm i struggle

and i remember one time keith i was in the hall way and and i totally young man and i kind of had an attitude when i said it to him was like dude come on man pick put your pants up like what are you doing don't know if i had seen him one too many times and i remember keith he said something that checked me he said all you had to do is ask oh get

how we approach folks he didn't get ruled of elise he just said all you need to do is ask and i take from that even more so many young people ready to lead ready to go to the next level want to grow want to thrive they're being judged instead of being helped you know i'm convinced if we'll judge less and help more we'll critique less and encourage more just like we're doing the job imagine your supervisor coming in right saying hey hey guys you know we suck well nobody is gonna get too

motivated right you know like like okay what are we going to do about it where we were we were empowered through helping and i think that mind set that's a mind set shift that i think we all can take on to say you know what sometimes the things i'm complaining about is the thing i'm challenged and i'm being all to assist and help off the side lines get down on the field put the work in we'll kind of judge and measure the results after we put the work

got a lot of critics

and we made a great point about that the team knows they suck

so as as an educator what can we do because i took a class this summer on entrepreneur ship and we had to go design a new school and the school i designed was kind of a cool school with my team was a school where corporations poured into the education and they developed kind of leaders they needed for their corporation because everybody doesn't have the same path toward their future

but how can we as you look at things how can we improve our educational system

[michael_t__brown]:

great question you know from being working in schools for so many years i think you just touched on something key i think schools need more influence from community and business yeah mental ship internship partnerships those school divisions who you do it do it well get that it's an all hands on deck approach if we can help you see a direct path to their job straight no chase just no filter right just this is how we can get you there right now they may get sparked now they may get more motivated so i like the the business community stepping in right corporation stepping in because what it does is it helps them see a path career wise with job wise it also can bring about that importance of mentorship i think schools need more mentorship you know some students get motivated things that other students might not get motivated in finding one person who can believe in them so that that is willing to invest in them is gonna go a long way so i think getting corporations getting nine profits involved going to help and fundamentally just on a more basic level making sure that shows are not reading and an adequate level by the time they leave elementary school oftentimes once they leave elementary school it's harder for them they mean they tend not to catch up it's harder for them to catch up so early intervention went reading so you know reading with your children early finding in books that they like creating a love for learning you know teachers who understand the multi um you know the multi step approach when it comes to education multi sensory approach is the word i was looking for you know tapping into visual learners esthetic learners audio learn you know getting the technology involved and make learning fun great teachers already get that i'm preaching to the choir to a lot of folks that you know we get engaged when we're having fun learn more on war having fun so those are some some things at a yeah
